Ancient India Soap Carvings

After reading Tusk and Stone, students tried their own carvings using soap. Students carved into their soap designs that Arjun, the main charachter in the story, would have done.

Ch.5 Tusk and Stone

After the interview, I was accepted and I went to camp. I met my elephant and her name was Gaja. After I met her, I looked at her right into her eyes. She threatened me at first but I stood in the ground and waited. When I met her eyes, a new me came out. A stronger, braver, and older Arjun Madval came out.

After I looked at her into the eyes, I went to the woods and I breathed heavily and I felt very scared. I thought she was going to kill me but she didn’t. After I left the woods, some recruits talked about the encounter with Gaja. Some didn’t want to talk about it so they just listened. A kavadai shouted my name and I thought they were going to transfer me to a unit of infantry. The mahout asked me question and said “What do you know about gaja?” The mahout also said if I wanted to live with elephants and I answered “Yes”. At the end, the mahout said to call him Rama and he made me his new kavadi.

    Chapter. 5
    2. P. Summary:
After the interview the sergeant told me something. I got accepted! When I was going to the elephant corps I felt I little scared. I hardly knew anything about elephants but this would give me a chance to find Gauri. I think I’ll be a little good because I could stand on a buffalo. The only difference is that it’s higher. I even met my elephant. Her name was Gaja. I looked her right in the eyes. She scared me at first but I sucked it up and kept looking at her.

I breathed heavily and I felt scared. I felt like she was going to kill me but she didn’t. Gaja was swinging his trunk everywhere. I was as scared as a mouse running away from a cat. After I was done I went into the woods. I felt very scared. I thought she was going to kill me but she didn’t. Later I left the woods a couple of recruits talked about the encounter with Gaja. A kavadai came to the barracks and called six people because they were being transferred to an infantry. Finally he told me his real name is Rama.

    Chapter 5
Summary: When I was going to the elephant corps I felt a little scared. I hardly knew anything about elephants but I knew this would lead me to Gauri and I would get stronger and brave and be free. But little by little I learned more about elephants and the main elephant was named, Gaja. Gaja was an elephant that was very sensitive and very smart. We had to do many tests and go through many things like water, the forest, and the desert.

When I was I was learning more about Gaja, I had to go up to Gaja and I was thinking that he threatens me. Gaja was swinging his trunk in the air but I stayed were I was. I was as scared as a cat in water! When I was done I felt stronger, braver, and older, I was still facing Gaja then the Mahout told me to go so I did and walked in to the woods. I felt much calmer after I faced Gaja as if nothing happened and then a kavadai came to the barracks and called out 6 names because they were being transferred to a unit of infantry, I was also called but by another kavadai. Shri Mahout told me I did well and he respected me since I looked in Gaja’s eyes. I told him I used to be a Brahman but not anymore. He told me his real name witch was Rama.
